If it seems there is less shade on campus, it is not just your imagination.  A powerful monsoon storm with heavy rain, hail, and strong sustained winds on the afternoon of July 14 damaged or toppled more than 80 trees across campus.  Damage ranged from broken branches to complete uprooting.

The trees will be missed as they were notable features of the campus landscape, contributing shade and aesthetic accents that softened our harsh arid climate.  Some of the trees were significant specimens in the Campus Arboretum collection because of their uniqueness, history, or age.

The Grounds and Labor Shop responded immediately, surveying the damage and clearing debris to clear sidewalks and roadways.  They mobilized several contractors to remove the larger trees and limbs and over the next several days trimmed and repaired many trees and continued to clear debris.

Two large cypress trees on the west side of Old Engineering, fell across the main building entrance, damaging masonry work at the south end of the stairs.  The Mason Shop quickly repaired the damaged masonry.  Other shops performed similar repairs where needed.
